PRESS RELEASE
ART IN MOTION: THE ART OF PILGRIMAGE
CALL FOR PAPERS
The University of Akron & Oberlin College Undergraduate Art History Symposium
Date: February 13-14, 2009
Location: University of Akron, Myers School of Art, Akron, Ohio
One of the earliest and most universally recognized religious rites is the act of pilgrimage. Undertaking a lengthy journey in search of a spiritually edifying experience usually involved traveling to a sacred place or shrine. Historically, these journeys were taken in order to request aid or to discharge some religious obligation.
As part of the larger program series, Art in Motion: The Art of Pilgrimage, this undergraduate symposium will investigate the theme of pilgrimage as object and subject and how it affected the development of the various culture’s visual and material traditions. Particular consideration will be given to themes addressing aspects of medieval Christian pilgrimage, but papers addressing all traditions of pilgrimage will be considered.
Please submit via email an abstract of no more than 300 words by November 28, 2008.
Include a one page letter from your advisor approving your abstract.
Completed papers should be submitted for final approval by January 21, 2009.
All questions and submissions should be directed to: Heath Patten, associate lecturer, patten@uakron.edu or Deb Lamm, graduate student, dzl1@uakron.edu.
