Community Day at the Art Museum

Every semester the Allen Memorial Art Museum features Community Day, a day of activities geared toward families and elementary school students. As usual Director of Education Jason Trimmer and student docents will be organizing the events. The press release on the museum’s website reads as follows:

This semester’s Community Day will feature an artist from Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio leading an arts workshop geared especially towards primary school students. Parents, mark your calendars! Community Day is taking place on a day when Oberlin City Schools are off, providing a fun and educational activity for your children.

The featured artist for Community Day, Augusto Bordelois, will be familiar to area residents from his participation in the annual Oberlin Chalk Walk. His workshop, titled ‘Dinosaur Fables,’ is an interactive combination of storytelling and real-time illustration that will keep students laughing and learning from the beginning to end. ‘Dinosaur Fables’ will help to explain the “big picture”; the relationship between human behavior and nature. The stories are an amusing “hook” to reflect on real issues, such as the water cycle, the depletion of natural resources and alternative energy sources.

This semester’s event will also include storytelling times conducted by Oberlin College student docents. Docents will read from a variety of thematic and art-related children’s books, including favorites such as ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon,’ by Crockett Johnson, ‘From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,’ by E.L. Konigsburg, and ‘The Dot,’ by Peter H. Reynolds, among others. The Oberlin College ‘America Reads’ program will also be on hand to distribute free books to all interested participants.

The event begins tomorrow Friday Marchy 21st at 12:00pm and goes until 3:00pm.
